Martyn Beckett was the eldest son of Gervase Beckett, MP for Scarborough and Whitby. Gervase Beckett was created a baronet in 1921, and on his death in 1937 Martyn, a schoolboy at Eton, succeeded to the baronetcy. Martyn attended Trinity College, Cambridge and trained as an architecture student in the office of A.S.G. Butler; he opened his own practice in 1952. Martyn was related to the Feversham family of Duncombe Park, where he performed some work in the 1950s.
