Though many laws exist in Britain and
Ireland to protect historic country houses, a surprising number of
houses are in danger of demolition or alteration that would
significantly alter the historic integrity of the house.
SAVE Britain's Heritage maintains a database called the Register
of Buildings at Risk. For £25
(approximately US$50) you can become a Friend of SAVE and have online access to over 1,000
threatened buildings in the U.K. An annual catalog of the
buildings at risk is also published each February.
Formed in 1975, SAVE is one of Britain's most active preservation
organizations. Through press releases, reports, exhibitions,
conferences, lectures, and
books, SAVE champions the cause of decaying country houses, blighted
streets and neighborhoods, cottages, railroad stations, hospitals, and
military buildings. SAVE isn't simply about saving buildings; it
places special emphasis on alternative uses for historic buildings that
give these treasures new life.
