Yorkshire may contain more magnificent historic houses than any county in Britain.  We visited many of them, including Castle Howard, famous as the starring player in the two filmed versions of Brideshead Revisited, as well as the little-visited Sledmere House, a Neoclassical jewel, where we were hosted for lunch by Sir Tatton Sykes, Bt., the current owner of the magnificent house that his family has owned since the 18th century.

One of the highlights was a visit to the mysterious Wentworth Woodhouse, a house never open to the public that boasts the longest façade – 650 feet – of any private house in Britain.  We had magnificent dinners at Fairfax House, one of Britain’s finest townhouses, and the luscious Bramham Park.  Harewood House, one of England’s treasure houses, gob smacked us. The only thing better was the luxurious Middlethorpe Hall in York, our home base for all seven days, and one of England’s supreme country house hotels.
