House & Family History
Westonbirt was the country house (his London home was the famous Dorchester House, also designed for him by Lewis Vulliamy) of the great 19th century collector Robert Stayner Holford (1808-92). Holford was a noted collector of books, manuscripts, and fine and applied art, as well as trees and shrubs, which he tended at the famous Westonbirt Arboretum, which he founded. In 1928 the House became a school.
