House & Family History
The Tempest family was Roman Catholic, and the House was thought to have secret rooms with which to hide priests. Jane Tempest, sister and heiress of Sir Francis Tempest, married the Roman Catholic William, 4th Lord Widdrington. Lord Widdrington joined the 1715 Rebellion, and was penalized with death and the confiscation of his lands. He was later pardoned, and his lands were restored to his family in 1733. Lord Widdrington died in 1745. Jane Cowen lived at the House until 1946, leaving the estate to the University of Durham. House was demolished in 1953 and replaced by a housing estate.
